Plan charts course for future sleep and circadian research identifying opportunities for collaboration.

Recently the NIH has updated its plan for research into new approaches to the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders.  Over the next three to five years, the institute has recommended research initiatives to include looking at the connection between sleep and circadian systems, studying the influence of genetic and environmental factors that could influence a person’s sleep health, and conducting more comparative effectiveness trials to improve treatments for sleep and circadian disorders.

ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA MARCHES ON PARLIAMENT HOUSE

A group of 500 people marched on parliament on October 13 in the fight against dementia.  The assemblage gathered to demand a $500 million Dimentia Action Plan over five years in the next federal budget.  Alzheimer’s Australia president, Ita Buttrose led the march and warned there will be 75 000 baby boomers with dementia in 2020, just eight short years away. The Wesley Hospital

Inpatient tertiary level care is available for patients with complex thoracic medical disorders, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive lung disorders (emphysema, bronchiectasis), asthma, plus acute care. Patients are admitted via The Wesley Hospital Emergency Centre (WEC).

The Wesley Hospital is the largest private hospital in Queensland. With 430 in-patient beds, the Hospital offers the state's most comprehensive range of private medical facilities. These include the specialties of cardiovascular, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and women’s health. These services are supported by a state-of-the-art intensive care unit, cardiac catheter theatres, 24-hour emergency, renal dialysis, radiology (MRI, spinal CT, PET scanning and nuclear medicine), radiation therapy, pathology, pharmacy services, IVF, haematology and oncology, hyperbaric medicine and neurovascular interventional services.

Bronchoscopy Services

Bronchoscopy evaluation is a technique of visualizing the inside of the airways for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. These are performed in The Wesley Hospital Endoscopy Unit.

As procedural thoracic physicians Dr Andrew Scott and Dr John Feenstra have a very high level of experience in this area.

The Wesley Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme

'Breathwise', a pulmonary rehabilitation programme based at The Wesley Hospital, focuses on a multi-disciplinary outpatient programme for patients with chronic lung disease, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Find more information on the pulmonary rehabilitation programme.

The Wesley Pulmonary Hypertension Unit

The Wesley Hospital is now a designated Australian treatment centre for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH).

Developed by TSGQ Directors Dr Feenstra and Dr Scott, with Dr David Cross of 'Heartcare Partners', this unit provides optimal care for patients with pulmonary hypertension. Our unit has Federal Government funding for medications including parenteral, inhaled and oral vasoactive agents that act as pulmonary vasodilators to treat this condition. Monotherapy or combination therapy are trialled under the supervision of our treating physicians. For more information on the pulmonary hypertension unit,  Currently the only private hospital facility in Queensland providing this service, and actively involved in international trials.

The Wesley Asbestos Research Group

Unique in Queensland, this research Group seeks to facilitate research and raise awareness of asbestosis and asbestos-related diseases both to the medical fraternity and the general community, with the aims of improving treatment and enhancing the quality of life of those affected.
