Light and Sleep doesn't mix!

New research is supporting the theory that light exposure prior to sleep is detrimental to sleep quality. The research , to be published in March in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, suggests that light exposure after sundown can reduce production of Melatonin.lightbulb

Melatonin is an important chemical for regulating sleep wake cycles. Melatonin has been shown to lower blood pressure and body temperature. Both of which are extremely important for preparing the body for a relaxed restful sleep. The authors found that responses to room light (regular level lighting) and dim light were vastly different. The subjects who experienced room light had their Melatonin secretion supressed by more than 50%. The study alludes to the potential for further research into the affects room lighting could have on shift workers who regularly experience sleep disorders.

Controlling the level of nighttime lighting is one form of sleep hygiene that can be practiced to optimise your chances of a good nights sleep. Sleep hygiene refers to any bedroom behaviours which can influence an individuals sleep. We have put together some information on how you can improve your sleep hygiene here.
