Flu Season 2010: Where is it?

The flu season was scheduled to begin in April-May 2010 after the first case of H1N1 in Tasmania was reported back in March. Officials predicted a second wave of the H1N1 virus, which was responsible for nearly 15,000 deaths worldwide in 2009, however this never eventuated and has been a relatively quiet flu season thus far.

"The reported cases of influenza this to date this season have been down on the cases we saw last year" says Dr John Feenstra of TSGQ, "It seems there has been a slight delay of onset for flu season.  It is likely there will be a pick up in cases it is unlikely to reach the levels of last year." Doctor Allan Hampson of the Influenza Specialist Group also highlights evidence to support this view. Dr Hampson states the close link to New Zealand suggests it is likely that cases should be on the increase in the next few weeks.

New Zealand is used as a barometer for Australia regarding rise and fall of influenza cases. Trends in New Zealand are mirrored by trends in Australia on a two week delay, giving advanced warning of the likely strains to affect the Australian population. Influenza cases in New Zealand have recently been on the increase suggesting similar trend for Australia. The H1N1 virus will still be an influence on this years flu season however is unlikely to peak at the levels after its initial outbreak. The WHO (World Health Organisation) suggests the strain will be in circulation for a number of years yet but with the success of the vaccine program the reported cases should be well controlled.

With the liklihood of an increase in flu cases just around the corner it is not too late to get vaccinated against infection.  If you are interested in getting vaccinated you should contact your local GP and make a booking. Your GP should be able to provide you with a vaccination or be able to direct you to the nearest clinic which can assist you.
